Tapas Brasileiras Dez (#10): More Ipe Info

Here are some additional details regarding the main programs designed & managed by Instituto Ipe Cultural:

1.       Recicla Cerrado Program

The objective of this program is to change people’s habits by teaching different ways of utilizing recyclable materials. Program participants use products such as PET bottles, plastics, foil, glass, and others to design artistic, environmentally friendly products.

In addition to saving the environment, the project offers several benefits to the local community including food, free dentist appointments and shirts made out of recycled plastic bottles, among others. The program is also very innovative because it encourages people to bring in recyclable materials in exchange for green coins that can be used to purchase other environmentally friends products.

Recicla Cerrado started in 2009.  To date, it has collected more than 36.3 tons of recyclable materials and offered several handcraft classes to the community at Ipê. This project has already received the Ecopet Award twice.  (NOTE:  This is an award granted by the Brazilian Association of the PET plastics.)

2.       "5 Special Senses"  (See my prior blog entry)

Operating since May 2007, the "5 Special Senses" project allows disabled people (those with visual, hearing or physical disabilities, as well as those with Down's Syndrome or autism) to experience art in a multi-sensory way. This project uses a revolutionary treatment created in Spain 30 years ago that makes interventions in five areas of human development (autonomy, cognitive, motor, language and social) and emphasizes the importance of introducing art to improve the quality of life of individuals with disabilities.

3.       “I Plant Culture”

Since January 2008, the local government has provided fiscal incentives for individuals and companies that support the development of cultural initiatives in Uberlândia. Under a program called “I Plant Culture,” the Ipê Institute organizes lectures, workshops, video conferences and roundtables to increase awareness of local art to the general public and to promote the fiscal incentives that are available through the sponsoring of cultural programs.

4.       Adopt a Collaborator

The “Adopt a Collaborator” program aims to assist vulnerable populations with life and professional skills. Ipê Cultural Institute partners with local companies to offer a number of benefits such as: monthly stipends, transportation, food, medical and dental care, nutrition sessions, English classes, conferences, workshops, environmental education and cultural events. The program also offers scholarships and vocational courses to excelling students.

Many of the project’s collaborators have been adopted by local sponsor companies such as: Rec Transportes, Sadia, Hippo Pizza, Ubertubos, Rotina, SEAP and Esamc. Others collaborators have found jobs due to their skills development and received recommendations for open positions.
